The Indianola boys and girls basketball teams fell to Dallas Center-Grimes in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader Friday evening, the girls falling 63-63 and the boys 58-50. The Indians boys led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter, but quickly would see their offense struggle to score. The Indians had their lead cut to eight at halftime at 31-23, then the Mustangs would slowly whittle away the lead to 39-34 going into the final eight minutes, where DCG would outscore the Indians 24-11 in the final frame. George Blake led the Indians with 18 points.
The shorthanded Indians girls were without leading scorer Madi Grover, but still battled the entire contest with the #4 Mustangs. The Indians trailed 15-14 after the first, but a quick 7-0 run gave them a 21-15 lead before DCG would answer and take a 31-28 lead at half. The Mustangs would stretch the lead into double digits in the second half, but Indianola again crawled back to have the ball down just five with under a minute to go, but were unable to close the gap.
Head coach Jeff Janssen said his team never gave up and never folded despite the deficit, and they are continuing to see the building blocks of a successful team despite the loss.
Lauren Olson led the team with 21 points.
The Indians girls are now 5-4 and 2-2, while the boys are 5-2 and 2-2, and both teams will play on Monday hosting Ames.
