
Newton High School athletes involved in bowling, wrestling, and swimming were in action on Saturday.
The Cardinal boys and girls bowling teams lost to Ottumwa on Senior Day at Cardinal lanes. The boys were beaten by 80 pins 2,953 to 2,873. The Newton girls came up 66 pins short, losing 2,465 to 2,399. Jeremiah Kilmer had a 213 high game for the Cardinals while Braden Baskerville produced the high two-game score at 412. Senior Gabbie Humphrey had the high game and score for the girls at 208 and 374. It was the first loss of the year for the Newton girls, who are now 6-1. The Cardinal boys fell to 2-4. Both teams will compete in a triangular with Des Moines Lincoln and Marshalltown in Des Moines on Tuesday.
The Newton boys swim team took fourth at the six-team Wahawk Invitational in Waterloo. Cardinal senior Finn Martin was the event’s top performer with four first place finishes. Martin won the 50 and 100 freestyles in season best times of 21.25 and 46.48. He also teamed with Ethan Comer, Hudson Meyer, and Caleb Punt to win the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Punt was second in the 200 freestyle while Comer placed second in the 200 individual medley. The next competition for the Newton boys swim team is the Cruise-Voss Men’s Swimming Invitational in Cedar Rapids next Saturday.
The Cardinal boys wrestling team finished 9th at the Ottumwa Invitational. Twenty-three schools were represented, and Kent Montgomery and Nick Milburn claimed second place at 120 and 215 pounds. The next highest finish for Newton was 6th, with Aiden Robson at 150 pounds, Lane Rozendaal at 175 pounds, and Colbey Revell at 285 pounds. The Bettendorf Midwest Shootout Invitational is up next for the Cardinal boys next Saturday.
The Newton girls wrestling team was in Ogden Saturday with wrestlers from over 25 other schools. The Cardinals finished 15th with four podium finishes. Kylee Adams was third at 110 pounds, with Ashlyn VanManen fourth at 235 pounds and 8th place performances by Alivia Conley at 125 pounds and Shawna Foreman at 155 pounds. The Newton girls wrestling team is now off until they host Dallas Center-Grimes on January 22nd.
