The Simpson men’s basketball team had a dominant second half as they took down Coe College Saturday 78-64, while the Storm women fell just short of a double-digit deficit comeback falling to the Kohawks 68-65 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm men trailed Coe for much of the first half with the Kohawks shooting north of 60% and the Storm struggling to finish at the rim, but the second half completely flipped as the Storm outscored the Kohawks 42-22 in the final 20 minutes. As a team, Simpson finished shooting 46.8 percent from the field, 8-for-22 beyond the arc, and 12-for-13 at the line. The Storm grabbed 32 rebounds, and collected 13 assists on only eight turnovers with nine steals and three blocks. Calix Cahill led the squad with 22 points, while Levi Gurwell had 21.
The Storm women outscored the Kohawks in all but one quarter, leading 13-10 after the first and 32-26 at halftime, but a disastrous third quarter saw the Kohawks grab a 53-43 lead going into the final 10 minutes forcing the Storm to mount a furious comeback where they got back within a point with under a minute to go, but a Coe bucket and the ensuing tying three from the Storm fell off for the loss. Maddux DeVault scored 19 points, while Doryn Paup scored 15.
The Storm men are now 6-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the women are 7-7 and 3-2, and both teams will host rival Central on Wednesday.
