Summer is still months away, but the Food Service Supervisor for the Newton School District is already thinking about the district’s upcoming Summer Meal Program. Supervisor Julie Miller told the school board Monday night the program will operate similar to last year.

“We are planning to do the weekly meal pick-ups like we did last summer, starting the first week of June. We will end the third week in August. So we are going to go a few extra weeks this year, which is different from what we did last summer.”

Miller says she is working on staffing the kitchens at Aurora Heights and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools next school year. She also said she does expect an increase in food costs to cover the new nutrition guidelines released last week, particularly in the area of adding additional proteins.
