The City of Newton is pursuing the purchase of a small home along First Avenue East that has been frequently visited by the City’s Community Service Officers. On Monday night, the Newton City Council will be asked to approve the purchase of 2 Bungalow Court for $60,000. City staff says the property owner has agreed to that price, after listing the house for $89,000 with a local realtor. The purchase would be made with Tax Increment Fund revenue from the First Avenue TIF District.
City Administrator Matt Muckler says Community Service Officers have been at this home approximately 30 times in the last five years, dealing with issues such as junk, harassment, parking, fireworks, and dogs. He also notes that the City already owns three other properties in Bungalow Court, and the acquisition of this property would draw the city closer to being able to market the area for potential redevelopment. The council meeting where the possible purchase will be discussed begins at 6:00 p.m. Monday night at Newton’s City Hall.
