Pella Christian Basketball Teams Swept by Indianola
Capping off a busy week, the Pella Christian basketball teams were swept by Indianola in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader heard live on the KRLS2 stream Friday night. The Eagle girls fell to the Class 5A #15 Indians 42-28 in the opener, while the boys dropped the nightcap 71-49.
The Pella Christian girls got out to a strong start, taking a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 33-18 the rest of the way in falling to 7-7 overall on the season. Ava Breems was the lone Eagle to score in double figures, going 4-6 from the field to record 10 points. Despite the loss, Pella Christian Head Coach Jon Mumm said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“Everybody that got on the court tonight did some positive things again and played hard, and that’s what we ask. We just want them to go as hard as they can when they’re on the court, and to represent our school and represent Christ. And the people recognize when they’re going to watch Eagles basketball, they’re going to see girls that are just absolutely fighting for each other and going as hard as they can when they’re out there on the court.”
After a tight first quarter in the nightcap, Indianola used a 21-point second quarter to grab a 29-20 lead at halftime. The Eagles didn’t go away easily, rallying to tie the game at 44-44 a minute into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 27-5 the rest of the way to fall to 7-5 overall on the winter. Gilbert Flagel led Pella Christian in the loss with 20 points, while Trey Steinkamp also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Pella Christian boys return to the court on Tuesday for a road game at Fairfield, while the girls are off until hosting Oskaloosa for Homecoming next Friday.
