It was another doubleheader sweep for the Simpson basketball teams Saturday in Dubuque as the Storm Women won 84-52 while the men won 88-73 heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

In the women’s game Simspon jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead with multiple layups and playing a press defense Dubuque was having trouble with. However, a timeout taken led to the Spartans going on a 9-2 run and ending the first quarter at 16-13. In the second, Simpson intensified the full court defensive press leaving Dubuque to turn the ball over several times. The takeaways from the Storm defense made it extremely difficult for Dubuque to score, while Simpson turned steals into layups. Senior Maddax DeVault led the Storm with 21 points including several drives to the basket finished off with layups. At the half it was 38-19 meaning a 22-4 Simpson second quarter.

With the lead increasing for the Storm in the second half, they were able to utilize their bench including 12 points from Kiera McCormick. Simpson finished with 47 bench points and improved to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the A-R-C. Meanwhile Dubuque fell to 4-12 and 2-5 in the conference.

On the men’s side it was as even as could be the entire first half. Simpson’s Levi Gurwell lit it up from three, knocking down four threes and finishing with 25 points. At the half it was 35-35. In the second half, unselfish basketball and good decision making sparked a lead Simpson never looked back on. Cam Henderson followed up his 31 point performance with 23 against the Spartans. Bo Huston came off the bench and finished with ten points. Simpson improved to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in the A-R-C. Meanwhile Dubuque fell to 10-6 and 3-3 in the conference.
