
The Newton boys bowling team had the top bowler at the Two Rivers Conference Meet at Cardinal Lanes on Tuesday and placed third as a team, while the Newton basketball teams lost doubleheader games at Dallas Center-Grimes as heard live on the KRLS3 stream.
Cardinal bowler Jeremiah Killmer turned in the best series at the conference meet, knocking down 731 pins. That total was 90 pins better than his closest competitor. Three other Newton bowlers finished in the top 15, helping the team place third with 2,842 pins. Jarrett Sweeney’s 618 series was fifth best. Carter Maki took down 517 pins for 12th, while Will Buren was 15th with a 558 series. The Newton boys bowling team is now off until they take on Sigourney-Keota in Sigourney on February 13th.
The Cardinal boys basketball team got off to a slow start in a 60-38 loss at Dallas Center-Grimes, allowing the Mustangs to score the first 14 points of the game. Newton then scored eight straight points and trailed 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals were down seven points at halftime, 25-18. But Dallas Center-Grimes pulled away in the third quarter, outsourcing Newton 18 to 9. Brody Wobschall was the only Cardinal in double figures, scoring 13 points. The Newton boys are now 5-8 overall and 0-6 in conference games.
The Cardinal girls lost to the #4 Mustangs 68-13. Dallas Center-Grimes led 20-7 after the first quarter and 44-10 at halftime. Emerson Ray scored seven of Newton’s 13 points. The team’s other six points were split between Camyrn Klein and Payton Carkhuff. The Cardinal girls conference record is now 2-5, and they are 8-6 overall.
The Newton boys and girls basketball teams return to action Friday at Pella.
