The Newton YMCA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their building on Thursday. Pictures and memorabilia from the YMCA’s history in Newton and the current building were on display, and snacks were available. Newton YMCA CEO George Sorenson says the building has stood the test of time, serving residents throughout Jasper County, from babies in the childcare program to members who are in their nineties.

“We did a study fairly recently, and you would be surprised by how many people who come in from Grinnell, Baxter, and Colfax that are members of our YMCA. So, we truly do serve all of Jasper County and are into Poweshiek County some as well.

The Newton YMCA is going to be using a $2.78 million federal grant for renovations to the 50-year-old building, so 50 new childcare slots can be created. Sorenson says other goals for the facility include dedicating some space for better programming for children and teenagers, as well as expanding access to fitness equipment. The Newton YMCA CEO talks more about the building’s 50th Anniversary and future plans for the facility in today’s Let’s Talk Newton.
