As the City of Norwalk continues to grow, fire department leaders say long-term planning and funding for emergency equipment remains a priority.

Norwalk Fire Department officials say replacing a major apparatus requires years of advance notice, making early discussions during the city’s budgeting process essential. One of the department’s key focuses moving forward is planning for the eventual replacement of its tower truck, along with evaluating future apparatus needs as development expands. Norwalk Fire Marshal and Deputy Chief Jeremy Cross tells KNIA News it’s a long process.

“Apparatus builds right now are scheduled out anywhere from two to four years, depending on what you’re building. Even ambulances are 24 months plus out. That’s why you’re hearing about that right now in the council, it’s budget season, and making sure we get those placed into the right slot so we can get that filled and taken care of as we need to.”

Cross also said discussing funding early helps prevent gaps in emergency response capabilities and allows the department to keep pace with industry timelines. He added proactive funding and planning help ensure firefighters have the tools needed to respond safely and effectively throughout the community.
