The Newton boys wrestling and swim teams competed in conference meets Saturday.

Newton wrestler Kent Montgomery claimed the Little Hawkeye Conference Wrestling Championship at 120 pounds during the six-team conference tournament at Indianola High School. Montgomery was given a bye in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Sam Nelson of Oskaloosa by fall in 1:23 in his semifinal, and claimed the championship with a 9-0 major decision over Sawyer Nelson of Indianola. Six other Cardinal wrestlers scored points. Lane Rozendaal placed second at 165 pounds, losing the championship to Brayden Crosser of Dallas Center-Grimes by technical fall. Aiden Robson and Coleby Revell were third at 150 and 285 pounds respectively. 5th place finishes were turned in by Abel Aldama at 126 pounds and Zach Sheffield at 190 pounds. Taking sixth place for Newton at 132 pounds was Zander Robson. As a team, the Cardinals were sixth with 85 points. The event was won by Indianola with 239 points. The Newton boys wrestling team will compete again Tuesday in duals against Des Moines North, Pleasantville, and Saydel at Pleasantville High School. 

The Cardinal boys swim team finished third at the eight-team North Central Conference swim meet at Luther College in Decorah. Newton collected 265 points, and had seven top five finishes. Ethan Comer won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.95) and was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.86). Caleb Punt was third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.94) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.17). Hudson Meyer finished 4th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.81), while the Cardinals’ 200-yard medley relay team placed third (1:44.84) and the 200-yard freestyle relay was fifth (1:37.2). The next competition for the Newton boys swim team is the District meet next Saturday, February 7th at Ames High School.
