Pella and Oskaloosa split a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader last night in Oskaloosa, with the Dutch girls winning 55-42 and the Indians earning another upset victory over the Pella boys, 68-59 as heard live on KRLS2.

The Oskaloosa girls are winless in conference play, but gave the Dutch all they could handle, taking a 26-25 lead into halftime, but Pella turned up the pressure in the second half and won the final 16 minutes 30-16 to earn the victory.

“At halftime, coach told us to keep working together, keep playing hard on defense, box out, push it in transition and just work together”, said sophomore guard Carleigh Altwine. “We were trying to kick, swing and move the ball around to get a lot of different girls scoring.”

Emma Walkup led the way with 14 points and Kamryn Long added 12 before leaving the game for good near the end of the third quarter with an ankle injury. It’s Pella’s third straight win as they improve to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the LHC.

The boys game was a wire-to-wire win for the home team. Oskaloosa built a 16-5 lead after eight minutes, then withstood a 10-0 Pella run to start the second quarter and answered with five three-pointers in short order to reclaim control. The Dutch never got within six the rest of the game as they fall to 15-3 on the season and 7-2 in conference play. Jack McGuire had a 20-point 10-rebound double-double and Griffin Simpson scored 14.

Up next for both Pella squads is a short trip to Eagle Lane for the Tulip City Showdown against Pella Christian on Friday night.
