A series of bills proposed in the Iowa Legislature has the president of Central College concerned about the independence of private colleges in Iowa. Mark Putnam and his team shared an email recently with KNIA/KRLS to discuss House Study Bill 533 — which authorizes Iowa community colleges to offer baccalaureate degrees, HSB 544 — a bill to tax the endowments of private colleges and universities, and HSB 537 — prohibiting private colleges form having an office dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion. Putam worries that the legislation erodes the barriers between private education and government intervention. Hear more about the legislation on today’s Let’s Talk Pella.
