Pella Christian senior Garrett Wielard signed his national letter of intent to continue his academic and football careers at Morningside University.
A consistent presence at linebacker on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles, Wielard recorded 159.5 total tackles in his high school career, with 108 of them coming as solo tackles and 12.5 being for a loss. Garrett also added three interceptions to his defensive stat line. Despite missing two games with a broken finger this past fall, Wielard led Pella Christian in tackles with 68.5, while also registering six tackles for loss. Garrett played multiple roles on the offensive side of the ball, primarily playing offensive line, tight end, and fullback for the Eagles, but also stepping in to play quarterback for two weeks during his junior season. Wielard, who is in the midst of his senior basketball season, said he was excited to make the decision and be able to focus all his energy on enjoying the rest of his final year on Eagle Lane.
“When we were going on visits, I had to miss a few practices here and there, and I don’t love doing that. I’ve never been big on missing practices, and I felt bad for the coaches here during basketball that it almost seemed like I wasn’t giving them everything I have, but I’m doing everything I can, and now that pressure is gone. I can just focus on basketball and go and try to help us get to state and then win a state championship. Obviously we’re dreaming big, and we’re hoping for those things to happen.”
Wielard will join a Mustangs team that went 9-3 this past fall and reached the second round of the NAIA playoffs. Hear more from Garrett about his decision to attend Morningside next school year on an upcoming edition of Today’s Lely Radio Sports Page.
