The City of Knoxville has announced the awarding of $750,000 in federal grant funding for the Veterans District Sanitary Infrastructure Project.
The funding will help to build a sanitary lift station within the Veterans District, which will allow Knoxville to continue expanding housing and revitalization in the area. The funding was secured by Mayor Brian Hatch, city council members, City Manager Heather Ussery, former Economic Development Director Glenn Lyons, current Economic Development Director Christopher Watkins and with the assistance of Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, whose office helped secure the funding through the federal appropriations process.
“In order to continue building further west within the Veterans District, the sanitary lift station will become an important piece of infrastructure in allowing us to do so. With the momentum we’re seeing in the Veterans District, this funding couldn’t have come at a better time”, said City Manager Heather Ussery.
Miller-Meeks says this $750,000 investment in Knoxville will help expand housing opportunities, strengthen the local economy, and revitalize the area. The Knoxville City Council approved eight new lots in the Veterans District in October and at the time that was the farthest that the land could be developed without the new lift station.
