indianola-3

The Indianola basketball teams swept Newton Thursday night in games previously rescheduled due to weather. The games were broadcast live on 94.3 KNIA. The girls won 53-43, and the boys edged out a 54-51 victory.

The girls’ game saw huge step-ups from junior Alexa Guyer and sophomore Eden Whitson in the absence of Lauren Olson. Whitson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Guyer had a game-high 19 points. Freshman Julia McGraw also contributed 14 points. The Indians unofficially outrebounded the Cardinals 24-14 overall and 13-3 on offense. Newton’s Tori White led the team with 15 points.

The boys’ game was just as physical, but more dramatic down the stretch. Holding Newton at arm’s length for the first three quarters, the Indians went into the fourth leading 46-34. However, Newton would go 9-11 from the floor in the next six minutes, and Cardinal junior Brody Wobschall would score nine points in that time frame. Down three with five seconds left, Newton would get two good looks from three, but Indianola’s Wesley Nailor would seal the win, blocking Caden Klein’s three-point attempt at the buzzer.

George Blake led all scorers with 29 points on 10-13 shooting, making his first eight shots. He also finished with a double-double, adding ten rebounds. Easton McGraw followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Newton’s Isaiah Slaughter led their end with 12 points, all from three-point range. Neither team turned the ball over in the fourth quarter.

The Indianola girls team improved to 12-6 and 5-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, the boys improved to 8-7 and 5-4 in conference play. Both teams return to action tonight, facing Dallas Center-Grimes in Grimes, as the Mustang girls are ranked #3 in 4A. The games can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA and will be called by Mike Oeffner and Rob Hawkins. Pregame coverage is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
