The Newton boys and girls basketball teams play Oskaloosa at home tonight after losing conference games to Indianola in Newton on Thursday as heard live on 92.1 KRLS and the KRLS3 stream.
The Newton boys got down early, as Indianola scored the first twelve points of the game. The Cardinals trailed the rest of the way and lost 54-51. They were down 37-29 going into the fourth quarter. With a minute left in the game, Karter Holmes scored Newton’s final points on a 3-point shot, making the score 53-51 in favor of the Indians. Indianola would get a free throw, and then the Cardinals would miss two 3-point shots in the last six seconds in an attempt to tie the game. Newton head coach Jason Carter was proud of the team’s comeback in the second half.
“We battled really hard, especially in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, we dug ourselves into too big of a hole. We got off to too slow of a start.”
The Newton girls were defeated by Indianola 53-43. The Indians were up by nine points at half and had an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals were unable to close that gap. Head coach Jake Bennett credits the Indianola offense for the win.
“They did a really nice job hitting some shots against our two-three zone and had some 3-point shots go in. That opened the gate for them. We also had some turnovers that added to their offense with some transition points.”
The Newton boys and girls basketball teams will host Oskaloosa tonight in games that can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream, with pregame coverage at 5:45 p.m.
