
A Newton woman accused of purposely setting two fires in her North 9th Avenue East home entered a guilty plea this week. Newton Police claim the fires set by 48-year-old Kelly Lynn Durrett Elder her living room and kitchen on September 29th of last year caused significant damage. The Newton Fire Department was called to the house by another person living there, after the fires had been put out. Court documents state Durrett Elder admitted to police that she started the fires, and that her teeth, lips, and arms were covered in black soot. The Newton woman was charged with first degree arson, a class B felony, but District Court Judge Nicholas Bailey accepted Durrett Elder’s guilty plea to the class C felony of 2nd degree arson on Monday. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 30th.
