The Newton boys and girls basketball teams picked up home wins on Senior Night Friday against Oskaloosa in games heard live on the KRLS3 stream.

The Newton boys had to go to overtime to secure a 53-50 win. The Cardinals opened the game with a 16 to 4 advantage at the end of the first quarter, and held the lead throughout the second and third quarters. Newton was up 36-29 going into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 16 to 9 in the final eight minutes as Oskaloosa’s Tommy North hit a long three to tie the game at 45 with 11 seconds left. The Cardinals missed the last shot of regulation, and trailed by three with three minutes left in overtime. Among Isaiah Slaughter’s team-high 17 points was a 3-point shot with 33 seconds left in overtime that gave Newton a 2-point lead they would not relinquish.

Newton head coach Jason Carter knew Oskaloosa could put together a late run.

“They have been down to quite a few teams this year. They were down by 17 points at Pella early in the fourth quarter and came back and won at Pella. So we knew they weren’t going away.”

The Newton girls also got off to a good start, leading the Indians 12-4 at the end of the first quarter, on their way to a 47-35 win. Senior forward Tori White and sophomore forward Addyson Cibula each had 18 points. Head coach Jake Bennett says the game plan was to get points close to the basket.

“We had some sets drawn up and things we wanted to take advantage of, and they both did a really nice job of taking advantage of those.”

With the wins, the Cardinal girls are now 9-9 overall and 3-8 in conference games while the Newton boys are 7-10 on the season with a 2-8 conference record. Both teams will finish the conference schedule at home Tuesday against Norwalk.
