A longtime Newton Police Officer shared information about his job and experiences with the Newton DMACC Criminal Justice classes this week. Detective Andrew Shinkle spoke to the local DMACC students about the many different aspects of law enforcement and the varied job opportunities that are available. 

Officer Shinkle is a 2016 graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and spent five years as a Security Forces Specialist in the U.S. Air Force. He joined the Newton Police Department in 2020 as a certified drug recognition expert, field sobriety test instructor, bike patrol officer, and field training officer. In 2022, he was honored as the Iowa Central Region Drug Recognition Officer of the Year for his efforts investigating drug-impaired drivers. He conducted over 21 evaluations in 2021, which was the highest number in Iowa’s central region.
