Central Basketball Teams Down Dubuque for First Doubleheader Sweep of the Season
The Central basketball teams earned their first doubleheader sweep of the season Saturday at the University of Dubuque, with women downing the Spartans 86-75 and men pulling out a gutsy 79-73 win in a twinbill heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Dutch women were firing on all cylinders offensively from start to finish, posting their highest point total in a game this season.. A strong first half catapulted Central to a 42-33 halftime lead, and they picked up right where they left off in the second half by shooting 53.4% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. Emily Naughton had a big second half in the win, scoring 16 of her 25 points in the final 20 minutes of play. CeCe Moore added a double-double, posting 18 points and 10 rebounds.
It was an overall team effort from the Dutch men, who had three separate players record double-doubles. Forward Owen Schipper continued his great play with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 9-11 from the field (82%) and 4-5 from three-point range (80%). Freshmen Kyle Cason and Braylon Thomsen both made major contributions as well, with Cason scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and Thomsen put up 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Central basketball teams will look to carry the momentum into a home doubleheader on Wednesday against Simpson College that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS and 94.3 KNIA.

Four Dutch Track & Field Records Fall
Competing at the Wartburg Indoor Select and Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational the Central College men’s and women’s track and field team took down a quartet of program bests. No team scores were held at either meet.
On Friday, the 4×400-meter relay squad Alivia Roerdink, Kennedy Petersen, Emily McMartin and Ava Parkins clocked in at 3:49.85, which not only set a school record, but also gave the quartet the top ranked time in Division III. Because the NCAA Division III Championships will be held on a banked track, Friday night’s mark is converted down to 3:46.84. Parkins also became the first Dutch woman to go under 57 seconds in the 400-meter dash, winning the race in 56.94 seconds. Kale Purcell rewrote the indoor men’s triple jump record with a leap of 49 feet, 0.75 inches. Erasing a school record that stood since 1979, Olivia Bohlen totaled 3,592 points as the only Division III entry in the field at Nebraska. She has the top qualifying total in the country as well.
Central is competing at the Darren Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College next weekend with a few distance athletes traveling to the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.
