Swimmers from Newton and Pella have advanced to state.
Finn Martin will be heading back to state to shoot for his third state championship in the 50-yard freestyle, and to defend the 100-yard freestyle championship he earned last year. Martin won both events. His 20.19 finish in the 50-yard freestyle matched his fastest time ever, and the time he posted to win the championship one year ago. His 100-yard freestyle time of 44.18 set a pool and school record, and beat his State Championship winning time from last year.
Caleb Punt will join Martin at state in the 50-yard freestyle, as he placed third in 21.79. Hudson Meyer will compete in the 100-yard backstroke with a third-place district finish in a personal best time of 55.96. Ethan Comer is also heading to state in the 100 yard breaststroke with the 25th best time in Iowa (1:01.67).
Martin, Punt, Meyer, and Ethan Comer advanced to state in two relays, winning the 200-yard freestyle and placing second in the 200-yard medley. Their freestyle time of 1:26.72 was a school record and faster than the time that earned them a 10th place finish at last year’s state meet. Their medley relay time of 1:36.25 was a season best.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Swim Meet will be Friday and Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.
