A Newton man involved in an April 2024 burglary at a Newton tattoo shop has been ordered to pay $3,265 in restitution. The restitution order against 35-year-old Joshua Tyler Troen was approved in Jasper County District Court. Last month, Troen was sentenced to a deferred judgement with three years of probation and an $855 civil penalty. He was originally charged with 2nd degree theft, and pleaded guilty to 3rd degree burglary. Both charges are class D felonies.

An employee who had just quit working at the tattoo shop was sentenced in September, after also pleading guilty to 3rd degree burglary. Thirty-six-year-old Barron McCullum was given a suspended five-year prison term, two years of probation, and a $1,025 fine.

Court documents say security camera footage shows Troen and McCullum inside the business at 2 a.m. on April 27th, 2024. Both reportedly took cash from a money drawer while Barron collected his tattoo equipment.
