A pet has died in a home destroyed by a fire in Newton this evening.

According to the Newton Fire Department, neighbors called in a house on fire in the 600 block of West 3rd Street South just before 6 p.m. At least one dog as died and another pet is missing. The home is considered a total loss. The Newton Fire Department was assisted by nearby agencies from Colfax, Baxter, Kellogg, and Grinnell, as well as other city and county departments. Low water pressure also caused issues in fighting the fire.
