
The Newton boys and girls basketball teams will wrap up the Little Hawkeye Conference portion of their seasons at home tonight against Norwalk. Both teams lost to the Warriors when they played each other the first time this season on January 13th in Norwalk.
The Cardinal boys lost 65-39. Newton trailed by nine points after the first quarter, and was down 35-15 at halftime. In the second half, Newton was outscored by just one point, 30 to 29. Norwalk had seven more steals and made 69-percent of their shots, while the Cardinals connected on just 45-percent of theirs.
The Newton girls lost at Norwalk 66-42. The Warriors are ranked #4 in Class 4A, and outscored the Cardinals’ by twelve points in the fourth quarter of their first game, doubling their victory. Newton had 23 turnovers compared to Norwalk’s four. The Warriors also had eight more steals than Newton, and the high scorer for Newton was Camryn Klein with 13 points. Norwalk’s leading scorer was Braylynn Birmingham with 34 points.
The overall record for the Newton boys basketball team is 7-10, while their conference record is 2-8. The Cardinal girls have 3 conference wins and 8 losses, and an overall record of 9-9.
