The #4 in 4A Norwalk girls basketball team left no room for doubt as they defeated Waukee 82-44 in Waukee on Monday. Sophomore Braylyn Birmingham scored 50 points, which is a new program record.
The Warriors started their final week of the season with a nonconference victory over Waukee by their largest margin in almost three weeks. Braylyn Birmingham, Iowa’s #2 scorer, recorded 50 points in the win, the new program record for points in a single game. The previous record of 47 was set in the early 2000s by Jill Martin, former Drake Bulldog and Norwalk girls basketball coach. The Warriors move to 17-2 overall this season.
The Warrior girls will join the boys today in a conference doubleheader at Newton that can be heard live on the KNIA3 stream. It will be one of the two remaining conference matchups this season. The 6th-place Newton girls are 9-9 overall and 3-8 in conference play, most recently defeating Oskaloosa 47-35 on Friday. They are led in scoring by sophomore Addyson Cibula (10.3 PPG). In their last meeting, Norwalk defeated Newton 66-42.
The Norwalk boys are 12-5 overall and 8-2 in conference, sitting in second place behind Pella. They are coming off a 59-48 loss to Johnston on Saturday in the Crossover Classic hosted by Valley. The Warriors were held to just five points in the third quarter. 7-10 overall, the Newton boys are in last place at 2-8 in conference. The Cardinals are coming off a 53-50 win over Oskaloosa on Friday, in which they led 16-4 after the first quarter. They are led in scoring by sophomore Isaiah Slaughter (13.2 PPG). In the last meeting between these two teams, the Warriors won 65-39.
