A Prairie City woman listed as homeless by the Prairie City Police Department entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge in a felony theft case involving an iPhone. Prairie City Police allege 44-year-old Vanessa Kay Waldrop was involved with selling a stolen cellphone at a kiosk in the Newton Walmart on August 19th of last year. Prairie City Police say the phone was accidentally left at Bison Park by an Ottumwa woman. Waldrop and 24-year-old Dallas Scott Smithart of Prairie City reportedly found the phone and sold it.

Waldrop was originally charged with 2nd degree theft, a class D felony. Her guilty plea is to a serious misdemeanor charge of aiding and abetting 4th degree theft. She’s free on a $5,000 bond. A sentencing hearing has yet to be set.

Smithart was also charged with 2nd degree theft and pleaded guilty to a serious misdemeanor charge of 4th degree theft. He was sentenced in October to a one-year deferred judgement, one year of probation, and a $430 civil penalty. A restitution hearing in his case is set for March 3rd.
