Four Newton and Pella Swimmers will be competing in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Swim Meet today and tomorrow at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.

Finn Martin will go after his third state championship in the 50-yard freestyle, and attempt to defend the 100-yard freestyle championship he earned last year. Martin’s 50-yard freestyle time of 20.19 during last weekend’s District Qualifying meet matched his fastest time ever, and was the exact time he posted to win the championship one year ago. His 100-yard freestyle time of 44.18 was faster than last season’s Championship winning time. Caleb Punt will join Martin in the 50-yard freestyle (21.79) while Hudson Meyer will swim in the 100-yard backstroke, qualifying with a personal best time of 55.96. Ethan Comer is in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Martin, Punt, Meyer, and Comer will also compete in two relays at state. They won the 200-yard freestyle relay last weekend, and took second in the 200-yard medley. Their freestyle time of 1:26.72 was a school record and faster than the time that earned them a 10th place finish at last year’s state meet. Their medley relay time was a season best (1:36.25).

The Boys State Swim Meet begins today with preliminary heats at 5:00 p.m.
