
The Newton boys basketball team picked up an overtime 66-65 road win at Van Meter on Thursday while the Cardinal girls earned a 62-21 road win at Des Moines North.
In the boys’ game, Newton had three players reach double-figures. Brody Wobschall scored 20 points, Caden Klein 13, and Karter Holmes 12. Van Meter had the largest lead of the night at five points late in the first quarter and led 30-29 at halftime. Newton was up 44-43 going into the fourth quarter. But at the end of regulation, the game was tied at 59. The Cardinals outscored the Bulldogs 7-6 in overtime.
The Newton girls built a 5-point first quarter lead into a 22-point halftime advantage, 36-14. In the 3rd and 4th quarters, the Cardinals outscored Des Moines North 26 to 7. Newton hit six 3-point shots. Addyson Cibula led the team in scoring with 16 points. Camryn Klein added 13 points and Brooke Garvis got into double-figures with 11 points.
The Cardinal girls are now 10-10 and will host Des Moines Lincoln today in a game that can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream with pregame coverage at 6:45 p.m. The Newton boys are 8-11 and will play at Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday.
