The Newton City Council has endorsed the concept and authorized the fundraising for a Veteran’s Memorial in Veteran’s Section 3 of Union Cemetery. When that area of the city-owned cemetery was platted, space was allocated for a future Veteran’s Memorial. The concept that has been developed by local veterans groups and city staff consists of three monoliths, connected by a low brick wall. Bricks on the wall will be available to purchase in honor of Jasper County Veterans. Funds from the brick sales, along with other donations, will be used to pay for the construction of the monument. Newton Mayor Randy Ervin says city staff will be involved in making the memorial a reality, but no city funds are expected to be used for this project.

“The city will provide in-kind contributions of park staff, and their time, as needed.”

Union Cemetery is located in northwest Newton, by At-Large City Council member Jeff Holchuh’s neighborhood.

“I live right by there and I walk by it a lot during warmer weather. I have seen the design and think it looks very nice, and it will be a nice addition.”

Before the Veteran’s Memorial is constructed, the Newton City Council will have to approve the final design and award the project to a contractor.
