street-work

Ten separate streets in the City of Newton would see some Hot Mix Asphalt overlays under the proposed 2026 resurfacing program put together by the city’s Public Works Department. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says the program is focused on preserving structurally sound pavements with some cracking, raveling, and ride degradation. At the same time, curb ramps and pedestrian access routes will be upgraded to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements if needed. The engineer’s estimate for the 1.16 miles of overlays is $730,000. Muckler says the city will use Road Use Tax funds to pay for the improvements. The bid opening is scheduled for March 19th, with a public hearing and the anticipated awarding of a contract at the April 6th Newton City Council meeting.

The areas where the Hot Mix Asphalt overlays would occur are the 1100 block of North 3rd Avenue East, the 100-400 blocks of West 9th Street South, the 100-300 blocks of West 9th Street North, the 800 and 900 blocks of North 2nd Avenue West, South 3rd Avenue West from West 3rd Street to East First Street, the 100-300 blocks of East 4th Street South and North 4th Avenue West, the 300-400 blocks of North 4th Avenue West, the 400-800 blocks of South 4th Avenue East, and Larchwood Court,
