
Newton’s Finn Martin is a three-time 50-yard freestyle State Swimming Champion. He claimed this season’s title in a state record time of 20.06 during Saturday’s Finals at the State Boys Swimming Meet in Iowa City. Caleb Punt was in the 50-yard freestyle B Final and ended up 15th overall in a time of 21.88. Martin was unable to defend his 100-yard freestyle championship, finishing second. The winning time was 43.60, while Martin finished in 43.69.
Martin, Punt, Ethan Comer, and Hudson Meyer earned two 7th place podium spots in relays. In the 200-yard medley, they achieved Newton’s first podium finish since 2014, which was when coach Lucas Warner was on that relay. This year’s team finished with a school record time of 1:34.62. The foursome also took 7th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:26.00. As a team, the Cardinals placed 12th overall.
During Friday’s preliminaries, Comer was 21st in the 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries (1:01.02) and Meyer placed 27th in the 100-yard backstroke. They did not advance to Saturday’s finals.
