Construction is continuing on a major sewer infrastructure project in Southern Norwalk, which is designed to support future development and improve long-term system capacity.

The North River interceptor extension is a large sanitary sewer pipe project located along the south side of the community near the North River. The project will connect to the regional wastewater system and provide service to both existing and future development areas. Norwalk City Manager Luke Nelson tells KNIA News the interceptor is significantly larger than standard sewer lines and represents a major investment in the city’s infrastructure.

“That’s a large sewer pipe. A pipe is big enough that you and I could stand up in it. It’s at the very south end of our community, along North River, and it’s about a mile, mile and a half long, that connects to the current WRA sanitary sewer system.”

The project will help provide sewer access to Norwalk’s expanding light industrial area and the recently annexed 300-acre development area. Nelson says the project is approximately halfway complete and includes additional connections that will serve nearby commercial and industrial properties. City officials say the interceptor extension is one of the most important infrastructure projects currently underway, helping ensure Norwalk can support continued economic and population growth.
