
The Central College women’s basketball team upset Coe College 65-54 on Wednesday night, while the Dutch men came up just short in a 94-92 double overtime loss to the Kohawks.
Coming off a loss to conference-leading Wartburg on Saturday, the Central women bounced back to knock off the league’s second place team in Coe. The Dutch trailed 32-28 at halftime, but responded with a dominant showing defensively in the second half. Central allowed the Kohawks just nine points in the third quarter, while scoring 16 of their own. The Dutch then put the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter, outscoring Coe 21-13. Emily Naughton led the way for Central in the win with 18 points and five steals. Maddie Backer added another 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
Trailing by one point with 17 seconds left in regulation, the Central men took a brief 67-65 lead on an Owen Schipper go-ahead three pointer from the top of the key, but Coe tied the game with 4.7 seconds left to send the contest to overtime. The two teams traded blows in overtime, sending the game to double overtime, where the Kohawks knocked down the game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining. Anthony Gott led Central with a career-high 30 points, while also recording six rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Owen Schipper added a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds, while Braylon Thomsen added 17 points.
The Central basketball teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday, hosting Luther in a doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
