The PCM girls basketball team put together another strong defensive performance at home Wednesday night to defeat Creston in the Class 3A Region 6 semifinals.
The #6 Mustang girls closed out the first quarter against the 11-11 Panthers on top 18-10. It would then be a sluggish offensive second frame for both teams as PCM outscored Creston 9-2 in the quarter to go into half on top 27-12. The Panthers would slightly outscore the Mustangs in the third quarter as PCM led 35-21 entering the final quarter. The Mustangs would ultimately prevail and hold Creston to just six points in the fourth to seal the 43-27 win. PCM was led in scoring by Tori Lindsay who had 14 points and Lila Milani who had 12.
The Mustangs will now take on an undefeated #8 ranked Mediapolis squad at home Saturday night in the regional final with a trip to the state tournament on the line. PCM lost to Williamsburg in their regional final on the road last season and head coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez says the loss has given her team motivation this year and they have earned the opportunity to host the regional final.
“We just fell short up there and we hated that taste and it fueled us this offseason and it’s fueled us this season and obviously our crowd is awesome so to be able to play another one here and let them cheer for us, and the student section is great so of course we want to play at home and to have that opportunity is just a credit to how hard these girls have worked all season to win the games they needed to to put ourselves in this position.”
Saturday’s game in Monroe will start at 7:00 pm. The PCM boys will take on Van Meter tonight in their second round of substate action.
