An essential piece of navigation equipment for the Newton Municipal Airport is failing and will be replaced. Johnson Aviation, the company that manages the airport, told city staff about the problem with the current beacon, and recommended it be replaced as soon as possible. The Newton City Council has authorized staff to proceed with getting a new one installed, based on a quote from Van Maanen Electric in Newton. The company estimates the total cost at $15,566. Newton City staff has also been authorized to pursue an Immediate Safety Enhancement grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation, which would assist with 70% of the replacement cost if approved. The local match that’s required under the grant request is 30% or $4,669.80. City staff says Airport General Funds budgeted for grounds maintenance & repair would be used for that match.
