The Newton girls basketball team will try to upset #5 Carlisle in Carlisle tonight. The Region 5 Semifinal features the 21-1 Wildcats and the 12-10 Cardinals. Last season, on the same court, Carlisle ended Newton’s season with a 60-31 semifinal win. This year, the Wildcats have averaged 57 points per game, while Newton’s average is 43. The average score for Carlisle’s opponents this season is 33 points, while the Cardinals’ opponents have averaged 41. The Wildcats leading scorer is senior Macy Comito with a 21 point per game average, while sophomore Addyson Cibula is Newton’s top scorer at 11 points per game. Newton head coach Jake Bennett says the team played very well in their quarterfinal win over Bondurant-Farrar on Wednesday, and they need that type of effort again tonight to get the win,

“We know who they are, and we know the players they have. We are ready for it and hungry for it and know what the task is.  We are just ready to battle again and go back after it and be physical.”

Tonight’s regional semi-final between the Cardinals and Carlisle can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream, with pregame coverage at 6:45 p.m.
