Newton High School’s Rocket League E-Sports team will be competing Friday in the Iowa High School E-Sport Association’s Class 2A State Competition at the Orpheum Theater in Marshalltown. They are one of eight Rocket League teams to qualify.

This is the first season for E-Sports at Newton High School. The school’s resource officer, Kyle Lovan, started the program and had initial interest from just over 50 students. He’s proud of how both the Rocket League and Overwatch teams performed, and how the community helped get the needed equipment for the program.

“It’s amazing and I am so excited. Several businesses here in town helped by donating money, and some of the money came through some grants.”

The Rocket League team consisting of Brandon Holmes, Jeremiah Killmer, David Wickett, and Levi Zaabel will take on Waterloo East at 9:15 Friday morning. Both the Rocket League and Overwatch State Championships are being held at the Orpheum Theater.
