After winning their fourth District Championship game in the last five seasons, the Pella Christian boys basketball team will take on Union Community in the Class 2A Substate 6 Final tomorrow night.
The Eagles enter the contest seeking the program’s 18th appearance at the State Tournament since 1990, and their first trip to the Casey’s Center since it was Wells Fargo Arena in 2023. Meanwhile, Union is seeking their second consecutive State Tournament berth and third overall.
The Knights hold a 21-3 overall record on the year and a 15-3 mark in the North Iowa Cedar League, where they finished in third place behind 2A #5 Grundy Center and 2A #6 Aplington-Parkersburg. Through 24 games this season, Union averages 70.8 points, 32 rebounds, 16.8 assists, 9.5 steals, and 2.1 blocks per game.
Senior Caden Sorensen has led the Knights’ scoring efforts with 16.1 points per game this season, but has not played in either of their two postseason victories over Sumner-Fredricksburg and Columbus Catholic. Fellow seniors Cameron Mullen and Tate Van Dyk also average double figures scoring on the season for Union, recording 12.7 and 12.6 points per game respectively.
Pella Christian’s bid for a state tournament appearance begins at 7 pm tomorrow night, and coverage of the Substate Final against Union begins at 6:30 pm on 92.1 KRLS.
