A Newton company has been chosen to provide pieces of the new Veteran’s Memorial Monument that’s going to be set up in Veteran’s Section Three of Newton’s Union Cemetery. City staff say fundraising for the monument through memorial brick sales honoring Jasper County Veterans is progressing quickly, with additional fundraising being done by local veterans groups. With that being the case, the city has chosen McCall Monument in Newton to provide the three sira gray granite engraved monoliths and two jet black granite curved benches that will be part of the monument. The total cost of these monument pieces is $30,000.

The new veteran’s monument will consist of the three monoliths and two benches, connected by a low brick wall. Union Cemetery is in northwest Newton, in At-Large City Council member Jeff Holschuh’s neighborhood.

“I live right by there and I walk by it a lot during warmer weather. I have seen the design and think it looks very nice, and it will be a nice addition.”

Newton Mayor Randy Ervin says city staff is involved in making the memorial a reality, but no city funds are expected to be used for this project. There are 470 fullsize burial plots available in section three, and 317 cremation plots. Those spots are expected to serve the city’s needs for the next 55-to-60 years.
