A truck driver from southwest Iowa accused of attempted murder and other felonies for allegedly shooting at another semi on Interstate 80 in Newton has entered a guilty plea to reduced charges. The Newton Police Department says 56-year-old Patrick Lee Miller of Malvern fired multiple shots at another semi in February of last year, as the vehicle was passing him at exit 164. Newton Police called it a road rage incident, and said the other truck driver was not injured. The victim pulled off the interstate at the next exit on the east edge of Newton and called police. Jasper County deputies arrested Miller further down the interstate approximately 30 minutes later, and authorities recovered a handgun and multiple spent shell casings from his semi.
On Monday, District Court Judge Nicholas Bailey accepted Miller’s guilty pleas to aggravated misdemeanor charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and reckless use of a firearm causing property damage. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 1st.
