The Simpson softball team kept their perfect season alive in Norwalk Saturday with a pair of wins over Westminster heard live on 94.3 KNIA. It was a tail of two completely different games as the Storm won the first one 14-0, while the second game required a walk-off base hit for a 3-2 nine inning victory.
In game one, Simpson hit the ground running immediately with a seven-run first inning all started by an Ashlyn Steen infield single. Megan Heidelbauer backed up Steen with a triple driving her in to score. It was a hit parade after that as the Storm sent 11 hitters to the plate in the first with those seven runs scored on six hits and one fielding error.
Emma LaFave began in the circle for Simpson and got into a rhythm in the second and third innings, striking out five of seven hitters she faced. The Storm took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the third and the bats erupted again.
Kenna Rollinger began the hitting spree with a double to left center. Caelynn Obelton drove in pinch-runner Cheyenne Jones the very next at-bat. The Storm put the hammer down with a pair of singles, reaching on a fielding error and a McKenzie James RBI triple to increase the lead to 11-0. Later on in the innning, Katie Shaner and Brielyn Ginnaty strung another pair of base hits together to eventually get Simpson to the 14-0 victory.
The second game was much more of a pitchers dual as both teams aces threw a majority of the game in Morina Cronin for Simpson and Madison Plybon for Westminster. Just like game one, the Storm got off to a wicked fast start as Ashlyn Steen led the game off with a triple, marking her as the all-time hits leader in program history. She was then driven in by Megan Heidelbauer on a base hit into left field.
In the fourth, the Bluejays got the bats going with a pair of singles finished off by RBI double off the bat of Carlie Reiger to put Westminster ahead 2-1. Taking a lead into the fifth, Simpson answered back with three singles to tie the game at two.
The game required nine innings as Kenna Rollinger walked off Simpson with a base-hit into right center field to score pinch-runner Tatum Shepherd and secure the doubleheader sweep.
The Storm are off to Florida for 12 games beginning Saturday, March 14th.
