The next two seasons for the Newton girls basketball team will be built around three sophomores who combined for 68 starts in Newton’s 23 games this past season, and another sophomore who had two starts and played significant minutes in every game.

Addyson Cibula led the team in scoring with 241 points and in rebounds with 226. Camryn Klein and Sophie Coady were the fourth and the fifth leading scorers with 144 and 134 points respectively, and Klein was the third leading rebounder with 69. Emerson Ray came in off the bench this season and contributed 67 rebounds and 37 points. Newton head basketball coach Jake Bennett says all four learned by fire this season and  improved a lot. He adds the foursome and all of his returning players are very competitive.

“The team we will have next year is so competitive, they love to win. There were a lot of times when we lost and battled really hard, and there were tears in the locker room. As a coach, you love to see that because it means that it meant something to them, and they don’t want to lose.”

In order to have a deeper rotation next year, Bennett says there will be an emphasis this offseason on developing the three freshmen that were on the varsity bench this season, Jaya Bauer, Haleigh Bozarth, and Molly Meyer.
