A Newton man facing seven charges, including a felony drug offense following a domestic altercation last weekend, is free on a $10,000 bond. Court records show 41-year-old Matthew Alan McNeer was released from the Jasper County Jail Monday, with a court appearance set for this coming Monday, March 23rd.

Newton Police arrested McNeer last Saturday, March 14th, at his East 2nd Street South residence, after he allegedly assaulted a woman and injured an officer. According to the court filed criminal complaint, McNeer hit the woman in the back of the head and arm, causing bruising and knocking her face-first to the ground. He then allegedly kicked her in the leg. The Newton man reportedly had an odor of alcohol when he was arrested, and had trouble keeping his balance. He’s also accused of injuring a responding officer by resisting arrest, which required him to be taken to the ground. The officer’s injuries were reported as pain and red marks on both knees. When McNeer was searched, police allegedly found a plastic baggie with 1.3 grams of methamphetamine and a vape with liquid that field tested positive for marijuana. 

McNeer is facing a class D felony charge of 3rd offense or subsequent offense possession of a controlled substance; aggravated misdemeanor charges of 1st degree harassment,  assault on a person in certain occupations, and 3rd or subsequent offense possession of marijuana; serious misdemeanor charges of 1st offense domestic assault with injury and interference with official acts causing injury, and a simple misdemeanor charge of public intoxication.
