A Prairie City woman who entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge in a felony theft case involving an iPhone has been sentenced. On Tuesday, Associate District Court Judge Steven Holwerda issued a deferred judgment against 44-year-old Vanessa Kay Waldrop. She has to serve one year of probation and pay a $430 civil penalty. In addition, a restitution hearing in her case has been set for April 21st.

Prairie City Police claimed Waldrop was involved with selling a stolen cellphone at a kiosk at the Newton Walmart on August 19th of last year. The phone was accidentally left at Bison Park by an Ottumwa woman. Waldrop and 24-year-old Dallas Scott Smithart of Prairie City reportedly found the phone and sold it.

Waldrop was originally charged with 2nd degree theft, a class D felony. She pleaded guilty to a serious misdemeanor charge of aiding and abetting 4th degree theft. Smithart was also charged with 2nd degree theft and pleaded guilty to a serious misdemeanor charge of 4th degree theft. He was sentenced in October to a deferred judgement, with one year of probation, a $430 civil penalty, and $700 restitution.
