As part of Severe Weather Awareness week, Weatherology is encouraging local residents to start preparing their action plan in the event of severe weather. Meteorologist Ray Miller says it’s important to have multiple plans in place to ensure safety in any location or situation residents may be in when severe weather strikes.

“You want to have a couple of different plans in place for the different types of severe weather, and also for where you might be if you’re out and about. Kind of be thinking a little bit, especially this time of year when we do the tornado drill, about what action you would take, where you would go if severe weather hits, and where you’re at right at that particular moment. Really that’s kind of the point of the tornado drill during Severe Weather Awareness Week is to get you to think about those things.”

Miller adds that no matter where individuals may be when storms strike, the precautions that should be taken are usually the same.

“In general, for both severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, the safety precautions are generally the same. The idea is to get in a strong building, and you want to be as close to the center of the building as possible. Another way to think about it is you put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. So if you do have any debris blowing around, whether it’s in a tornado or just straight line winds that are blowing things around, you have as many layers of protection as possible. Then when we have a tornado warning, obviously, it’s a little bit more important that you get underground if you can.”
