Eleven Jasper County residents concerned about rising property taxes attended the public hearing on the county’s proposed 2026-2027 Fiscal Year Property Tax Levy on Tuesday night at the county courthouse. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors said the county’s proposed overall levy rates will be lower. But with increased property valuations, Supervisor Brandon Talsma said the tax asking will be staying the same again.
“We levied $17,444,000 in property taxes last year. We levied $17,444,000 in property taxes two years ago. The budget we are getting ready to certify right now looks like it’s going to be $17,444,000 in property taxes. In the eight years I have been in office, we, on average, only approve an approximate 2% increase every two to three years.”
The Proposed Countywide Tax Rate for 2026-2027 posted by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors is 5.37183. A resolution approving that rate was adopted by County Supervisors Talsma and Chair Thad Nearmyer. Talsma said Supervisor Doug Cupples could not attend the hour-long public hearing due to a scheduling conflict.
