A pedestrian bridge for hole #16 was delivered to Newton’s city-owned Westwood Golf Course yesterday morning. Newton Public Works Director Joe Grife says the new bridge replaces one that was destroyed by flash flooding from heavy rains on May 21, 2024.
“It’s a brand-new bridge with concrete piers that meets the golf course attendants’ needs for moving machinery back and forth.”
With the bridge out, Grife says golfers have been backtracking around the pond to access the green. Caliber Concrete in Adair submitted the low $516,458 bid to replace the bridge and stabilize the creek bank. There’s been significant bank erosion along the creek running through the golf course, and the city was worried that ongoing erosion would threaten the golf course’s infrastructure. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reimbursing Newton for the entire cost of the project.
