For the first time in over two decades, small towns in Jasper County who contract for law enforcement services through the county sheriff’s department will pay more for that assistance. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts got the County Board of Supervisors approval on the last three 28E agreement renewals this week. According to the Sheriff, the fees charged to most of the small communities have stayed the same over the last 25 to 30 years. A 6% increase has been implemented for the upcoming fiscal year, followed by a 3% increase each year after that. The Sheriff says none of the communities involved had a problem with the higher costs.
“They didn’t say anything. I think we were reasonable in the price compared to what it could have been.”
All eight agreements begin on July 1st of this year, and will run until either party requests it ends. Lambs Grove and Lynnville will both pay the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department $3,180 for law enforcement services in the coming fiscal year. The annual fee for Valeria in the coming year is $1,590. In February, based on Sheriff Shutts’ recommendation, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved new 28E agreements setting the Fiscal Year 2027 law enforcement service fees for Mingo, Oakland Acres, and Reasnor at $3,180 each. Sully will pay $23,956 for the coming year, while Kellogg’s fee goes to $26,500.
