In a wet, windy season opener for the Indianola Indians Boys Soccer team, they prevail in a road contest at the Lewis Central Titans with a golden goal scored less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Indianola jumped out to an early lead off a free kick followed by a tap in in the eighth minute by the Junior Captain Michael Martinez.
As the game grew older, the playing conditions became tougher. The temperature got colder, the wind picked up and the rain started to fall. However, the Indians stayed focused and played even with the Titans. Later in the second half, Lewis Central hit the equalizer on a breakaway in the 65th minute. Just 11 minutes later, on a free kick Indianola’s Senior Midfielder Damiam Mayo twirls a corner kick off the keeper’s finger tips into the side of the net to take the 2-1 lead with 3:07 left in regulation.
The Indians were able to defend the net for the rest of the match and prevail 2-1. Indianola returns to the pitch Friday at Southeast Polk.
